The term lap-pop has been sneaking its way into blogger vocab since people realized Fruity Loops wasn't a cereal, and British producer Camp America certainly loves playing in the same musical sandbox as all the cats making sugar-soaked party jams from their bedspreads. "Any Kind Of Pulse" stems from his self-titled EP of originals and sounds like Best Fwends trying to make soul music, a mid-tempo cloud of Casios and pop melodies that'll make you want to fly kites and have picnics and pet dogs. He's also given the once-over to some artists for a remix EP on Paper Bag, and we'll be unloading those tracks over the next week or so, beginning with his version of You Say Party! We Say Die!'s "Teenage Hit Wonder." The testy vocal and central guitar riff remain intact, but dude's added some propulsive beats and Laffy Taffy synths on top so that when the chorus of "Be my friend yah yah" goes over and over again you kind of wish you were playing video games with Andrew W.K. Can you imagine how sweaty and awesome that would be?
Sounds like: Totally Michael, Best Fwends, Matt And Kim

Now that Michael Nau has buried his Page France moniker for the timebeing, he's getting his folk swerve on as Cotton Jones. Or is it Cotton Jones Basket Ride? Hmm. With a handful of EPs already out, about, and sold out, "Gotta Cheer Up" is the first single from his upcoming—and more readibly available—full-length Paranoid Cocoon. More blacklit and tiedyed than what you might normally expect from Mister Nau, it's got a hazy Sixties vibe that befits its title, though the man-lady vocal harmonizing is Earworm City. True story.
For our one-year anniversary, we reached out to some of the people and artists that we work to ask them to create a playlist of tunes from our catalog. We got some great ones back, and we'll be posting them throughout the rest of the week. As always, these are embeddable on other blogs, websites, etc. so share them around and stay tuned for more.
Today we're publishing selections from Kim Schifino, drummer and one-half of Brooklyn's DIY dance-punk titans Matt And Kim. We world premiered their first tune in two years back in August, and now they've saddled up with the FADER label to release their new album Grand in 2009. We're also running a great contest around this playlist. If you embed it on your blog and send a link to contests@rcrdlbl.com with the subject "MATT AND KIM", you'll be entered to win a custom-made Christmas card from the band. Seriously, they could be making YOU a one-of-a-kind Christmas greeting, so spread this guy around, send over the links, and we'll choose a winner on December 17th.

Seeing Rodrigo y Gabriela live is the type of mind-blowing experience that gets your pulse up, your heart beating faster, your endorphins churning, your senses sharpened and depending on your attitude, impells you to move to your dream climate, climb mountains, and/or jump out of planes. It's the guitar equivalent of a shot of espresso. The Mexican natives who moved to Dublin broke and started playing at small dive bars, have slowly yet impressively taken the world by storm with their frenetic Latin and thrasher-rooted finger plucking. To get the day jump started, we're bringing you a track of their new CD ‘Live In Japan.' No translation necesary.

The original version of Findlay Brown's "I Had A Dream" (hear it at his MySpace) ends with trumpets, saxes, pianos, and strings wailing hard; huge stereophonic bombast to end what is actually a pretty delicate song. Today we're offering up an exclusive download of the sparer acoustic version, which strips all of that instrumentation away in favor of Findlay's halting voice and steady acoustic. While this is the only place you can grab that version, the original will appear on his new album Love Will Find You, due in 2009 and recorded with producer Bernard Butler, who used to front a little band called Suede. Also make sure to grab Pilooski's killer edit of Findlay's cover of "Promised Land," the house classic from producer Joe Smooth. Dude goes deep!
We're throwing a little contest around these tracks, as we've been gifted with some extremely limited edition wax from Findlay to give away. If you embed the single track player of "I Had A Dream" on your blog and send the link to contests@rcrdlbl.com with the subject "FINDLAY", you'll win a very rare seven-inch of "All That I Have," produced by Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve (Erol Alkan + Richard Norris) and mixed by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Luna, Low, etc.) There are only 500 of these in the world!
Sounds like: Ed Harcourt, Sondre Lerche, Tim Williams

Say you were about to turn fifty and you were putting to celluloid one of your very best tunes, a heartbreaker that happened to have been a wistful glance at your youth back when you wrote it almost twenty years earlier. If you could pick anyone to play yourself, anyone at all, who would you choose? Easy: Joey Tribbiani. No question.

This photo must've been taken very early on in the Duchess Says set at M Pour Montreal, because by the end of the show A-Claude had lost her boots and hoodie, her hair was a sweaty mane, she had jumped from the stage into the waiting and adoring arms of the first rows of kids equally as possessed as she, and after disappearing into the crowd she was hoisted up in the air and passed from the back of the room to the stage, screaming, singing and spazzing the whole time. As a musical outfit, these Montreal sonic revolutionaries are so tight that the live show takes the ferocious insanity of their album Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs and elevates the band to greatness. Here's hoping they venture into our country again soon - customs might get suspicious if I'm hoping borders every time I need a fix.

Cardigans and beards, horn-rimmed glasses and songs about falling in love - that's the route a lot of bands take to indie stardom. Dirty denim and leather, grizzle (well, one beard, but you'd imagine it's there to catch errant beer) and songs about, uh, guzzlin' and bitches - that's the Annihilation Time way. Hailing from Oakland and kicking off a tour last night in Asheville, North Carolina that will see them hit the hipster hot spots from Buffalo to Chattanooga, Annihilation Time are a crew you don't want to mess with - unless you're into messes involving sex, booze, illegal substances, firearms, destruction and volume levels that your mom would find highly inappropriate. These dudes are for real and when they offer the options of "worship or be crushed," grab a hymnal (or plastic cup full of beer/whiskey) and say amen (or an expletive of your choosing).
